Object Description

This wonderful porcelain huqqa (or hookah) is of Continental, possibly Russian origin and was made for export to Persia.

The huqqa features a slightly flared cup-shaped bowl on a knopped and waisted stem. This is set on a base with a ribbed cylindrical neck and flared bell-shaped lower body.

Crafted from white porcelain, the huqqa is finely hand-painted with deep blue flowers and leafy vines. The bowl and body of the huqqa also feature portraits of Naser al-Din Shah, the king of Persia in the late 19th Century. The reverse of the body is decorated with a deep blue image of the sun and lion, the symbol of Persia. These paintings are set within gilt oval medallions.
