Pair of antique Chinese wood and porcelain stands
Chinese, Late 19th Century
Height 95cm, width 58cm, depth 58cm
These stunning 19th century Chinese stands showcase the exceptional skill and artistry for which this region is renowned. Each stand is adorned with a square porcelain panel featuring vibrant, multi-coloured floral designs set against a rich turquoise backdrop. At the heart of the composition is a striking red flower, surrounded by delicate swirls of foliage and smaller blossoms. The design is framed by an elegant chain-like border, echoing the colours of the central motif.
Below the porcelain top, a finely carved wooden frieze draws attention with its intricate, nature-inspired patterns, mirroring the floral elements of the panel but with added depth and more detailed workmanship. The carvings are framed by subtle, pared-back bands that enhance the overall visual appeal.
The cabriole legs culminate in symbolic ball and claw feet, a motif deeply rooted in Chinese culture. In mythology, the dragon (symbolised by the claw) protects the ball, which represents wisdom or purity, from evil forces trying to seize it. Connecting the ornate feet are finely crafted stretchers, providing both stability and an added layer of elegance to the design.
These antique stands make superb display pieces for other cherished items.
