Pair of antique Empire style giltwood armchairs
French, late 19th Century
Height 95cm, width 66cm, depth 56cm
The beautiful armchairs in this pair feature a striking colour palette: blue and yellow, brought out in blue and yellow upholstery, and blue painted wood and giltwood frames. The chairs are in the Empire style, as evidenced by the Sphinx form front legs—the Egyptian Sphinx being a common motif in Empire period and style art. Each chair features an upholstered backrest, seat cushion, and interior sides, all finished with yellow fabric banded with cream and blue. The frame of the chair is painted a beautiful blue, and is parcel gilt to the edges and to certain motifs, such as the rosettes that line the top rail and seat rail, and the two front Sphinx form legs.
