Pair of antique gilt bronze mounted malachite pot pourri cassolettes
French, late 19th Century
Height 46cm, diameter 20cm
The cassolettes—or ornamental pot pourri vases—in this pair are wrought from malachite and gilt bronze, with the malachite veneer being a later addition. Each cassolette features a spherical malachite body with a pinched neck surmounted by a domed malachite cover. The body of each is adorned with gilt bronze swags and raised on three ornate gilt bronze legs, each leg ending with a hoof foot and mounted to the body with a winged putto. The legs are supported on a triangular malachite base raised on gilt bronze bun feet. The cover of each is topped with a gilt bronze pinecone finial, while the body of each features a gilt bronze pomegranate finial to the underside.
