Object Description
These vases are wonderfully built from a rich, green ‘serpentine’ marble, so called because of the similarity of its surface colouring and texture to the skin of a snake. Their large size and rich colouring make them well-suited to both interior and exterior settings in a Neoclassically-styled home.
Each vase is of krater form, with a wide-lipped rim and twin handles at either side. The handles take the form of satyrs’ masks, and the body of each vase is beautifully carved with a mask of Bacchus – the Roman god of revelry – in relief. Each vase is also gadrooned to the lower part and set on a waisted socle on a cubic base.
These vases are wonderful sculptural works, made in a beautiful and unusual variety of stone.
