Pair of Chinese cloisonné enamel and French ormolu mounted vases
French and Chinese, 19th Century
Height 40cm, diameter 19cm
This stunning pair of vases features cloisonné enamel bodies mounted with gilt bronze. Notably, the enamel bodies are Chinese in origin, while the gilt bronze mounts were subsequently added in France. The grey-blue ground of the enamel is adorned with wonderful polychrome foliage and flowers, all accented by the beautiful gold cloisonné wire—this wire also decorating the surface with an elaborate composition of geometrical forms. The mounts are equally impressive with their fine Chinoiserie styling, such as the ruyi head frieze bounding the rim and the pierced base below.
