Object Description
Each vase in this pair is baluster shaped and profusely ornamented with beautifully carved and layered lacquering. The body of each vase is lacquered in the traditional manner, typical of pieces produced during the late Qing dynasty, with black overlaid upon red. The black lacquer has been subject to carving, revealing the red below and producing beautiful high-relief imagery. The images depict wise men in idyllic landscapes upon the bodies, while the necks and waists of each vase are decorated with stylised foliage.
