Object Description

This pair of Louis XIV style chests of drawers is formed from ebonised wood inlaid with brass, pewter, and tortoiseshell and mounted with gilt bronze. Each cabinet features three front drawers, their faces ornamented with Boulle marquetry—one cabinet being the ‘male’, the other the ‘female’, in that the marquetry in one is the inverse of the marquetry in the other. Each of the three drawers is framed by gilt bronze and is mounted with a mask-form escutcheon. Each cabinet is topped by a marble top above a gilt bronze foliate frieze, and each is mounted to each side with classicising gilt bronze putto mounts.
