Object Description
A superb quality harlequin pair of Grand Tour-inspired brass and ruby and clear glass-mounted table lamps, fashioned as Ionic columns.
France, mid- to late 20th century.
Why we like them
Ultimately classical, timeless design inspired by ancient Greek examples, these architectural table lamps are superbly decorative.
The Ionic order is one of the three canonic orders of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric and the Corinthian. There are two lesser orders: the Tuscan (a plainer Doric), and the rich variant of Corinthian called the composite order. The ancient architect and architectural historian Vitruvius associates the Ionic with feminine proportions (the Doric representing the masculine).
Height excluding fittings: 21 in / 53.5 cm
