Each vase in this beautiful pair takes the form of an ewer. The bodies of the vases are formed of lapis lazuli and gilt bronze, the lapis veneer being a later addition—one that truly emphasises the beauty of the pieces.
Charmingly, the top of each vase features a large gilt bronze mount in the form of a swan, the swans wings functioning as the vase’s spout while the swan’s long, graciously curved neck serves as the vase’s handle. Gilt bronze mounts encircle the bottom of each vase, too—grasping, gripping acanthus leaves ring the lapis belly of each vase, joining at one point with the swan-from mount above. Each vase sits on a gilt bronze base, ornately cast, which is lifted off the ground by four scrolling gilt bronze feet.
