Pair of Orientalist paintings of the Egyptian desert by Lynton
Frame: Height 33.5cm, width 75cm, depth 2.5cm
Panel: Height 26.5cm, width 68cm, depth 0.5cm
The dramatic watercolours in this pair are by the English artist H. S. Lynton. The watercolours depict the Egyptian desert: Lynton has employed a limited colour palette dominated by shades of brown in order to convey the dusty heat of the desert. Both works depict temple ruins, one against white mountains and the other against a sunset sky. Caravans of figures pass by the ruins in each work, lending a sense of scale to the paintings. Each is signed ‘H.S. Lynton’ to the lower left, and one is dated ‘(18)99’ and the other ‘1900’.
