Object Description

A fine and rare pair of Regency Mahogany Library Armchairs upholstered in faded red hide with brass nailing, the deeply shaped backs flanked by scrolling arms and raised on Lyre-shaped mahogany frames with reeded details and turned front legs terminating in brass cups and casters.
Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London.

Note: There are minor differences between the two chairs in the detail.

Circa 1815

H: 38”, 97 cms, W: 27”, 69 cms, D: 24”, 61 cms.

Object History

Attribution: The lyre fronted Library Chair is a known Gillows pattern and featured in a number of homes they furnished during the Regency Period including Mere Hall and Hackwood Park . See Hackwood Sale Catalogue, Christie’s April 20-22 1998, Lot 55 for an almost identical pair supplied to William Powlett, 2nd. Baron Bolton for Hackwood, in May 1813 by Gillows.

Object Condition
