Object Description

Pair of very large Rococo style Dresden porcelain vases with covers and bases
German, Early 20th Century
Height 113cm, width 42cm, depth 37cm

These magnificent wares are a pair of large Rococo style Dresden porcelain vases, featuring an exceptionally grand, elaborate, and intricate decorative scheme, replete with beautiful painted, gilt, and sculptural elements.

Made in Germany in the early 20th century by the Dresden porcelain manufactory, a production centre closely related and connected to Meissen, the large Rococo style vases, with both covers and bases in a coherent stylistic scheme, are painted and decorated in gold. The walls of each piece are adorned with fine and wide gold edges, and large rocaille sections that are heightened in light purple and turquoise, that given the radiant white porcelain a beautiful tinge of colour, and accentuates the elegant sculptural forms of each piece.

The lids, or covers, are crowned with a cartouche held aloft by a pair of putti or children, one standing one afloat. The wide baluster forms of each vases are applied with two pairs of seated children or putti with wreaths on either side at the neck, with floral garlands decked between them in streams that flow down over the handles. The vases also showcase very fine Watteau couples in park landscapes, painted to the front of each vase, with floral garlands and bouquets to the reverse.

The vases, complete with the Dresden underglaze blue mark, and painter no. 32, are beautiful porcelain wares, demonstrating the very best of the artistic and decorative quality of the German Rococo style.
