Paul Marny (1829-1914)
Born in Paris in 1829, Paul Marny probably worked as a scene painter and decorator for Sevres before joining a French architect in Belfast. He became a landscape and architectural painter and was encouraged to move to Scarborough in 1860 by Oliver Sarony, the photographic pioneer. Scarborough remained his home until his death in 1914. He travelled frequently to France and in particular the towns of Normandy and Brittany which provided much of his subject matter. After 1878 he sold almost all of his work to John Linn, a local dealer. It has been suggested that his real name was Paul Francoise Goddard or Charles Paul Goddard but he always seems to have signed his works Paul Marny or with his initials “PM”.
