Object Description

Qianlong porcelain tea pot stand c1750 -1760 that has been decorated in London. the stand was made at Jingdezhen and then shipped as a white glazed blank. Tea pot stands were not used in China only in Europe
Painted with overglaze paints to show fancy long tailed birds perched on rocks, in trees, and in flight.
The decoration is undoubtedly painted in the James Giles workshop possibly by James Giles. But the Irish Jeffreys Hammet O’Neil (best known for his work on Chelsea porcelain) painted by repute at the Giles studio when possibly when there was not much work at the Chelsea factory. Steven Hanscombe makes the point that O’Neil’s birds and animals were painted with a character and liveliness more so than Giles. The other pointer towards O’neil could be the distant flocks of birds and the brown rocks which are a characteristic of his work
