Object Description

This super quality rare and provincial George II silver racing tankard was made in Newcastle in 1759 by James Kirkup and measures almost 5 inches tall by 5 1/8 inches from the handle across and is just under 3.5 inches in dia across the top and 3 11/16 inches across the base. To the front there is wonderful period engraving of a horse and rider above the inscription WON BY HIGHLANDER OVER MILFEILD 6 MAY 1766, it has a cast and scrolled handle with plain thumb piece and is fully and very clearly hallmarked under the base. A super mug in excellent condition weighing 12.10 ounces or 377 grams.
