Object Description

An extremely rare and unusual English mid 19th century (circa 1860) carved elm armchair of naturalistic style.

This decorative chair consists of an open back, arms and legs constructed in the form of branches of a tree with a gnarled wood appearance, the maker having taken influences from natural sources creating a very unusual and unique piece.

This chair has a very unusual design and is well constructed, showing the skill and expertise of both the cabinet maker and wood carver and was possibly made as a commission or sample piece.

Chairs of this type of design are usually from the Black Forest region, however, this chair is English due to the construction and therefore makes this an extremely rare item.

The upholstered ‘drop-in’ seat has a leaf design fabric to compliment the chair although this could be easily changed to an alternative fabric once purchased.

This chair is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
