Object Description

A mahogany Campaign Day Bed or Couch.

To dismantle, the back and end simply unbolt from the bed frame. The short end has two iron bolts and the back has one towards the foot. The side fixes to the back with a metal locating pin towards the bottom and a brass thumb bolt towards the top. The Couch is very sold in its build with bulbous turned legs and beech secondary wood. The legs have good brass castors. The front of the couch is carved in a classical style to the upright edge with a paterae, a moulding panel and a fan motif to the top.

The Couch has historically been reduced in length by approximately 18 inches, going on the position of the bracing bar which originally would have been central. The shortened length probably makes it more practical for modern use. It is perhaps a little wider than you might expect but this would fit in with an officer also being able to use it as a bed.

A few Victorian makers such as Ross & Co and S.W. Silver made portable Couches but not many are seen of the Regency period. Circa 1825.
