Object Description

A Good Quality Regency Mahogany Boat Shaped
Canterbury Having Elegant Turned Upright Supports
And One Well Figured Frieze Drawer Raised On
Elegant Turned Legs

(The name Canterbury is believed to have originated
for these articles when the Duke of Canterbury originally
commissioned a similar item with both horizontal and vertical
divisions that could be rolled around on its castors to have
cutlery stored in towards the end of the 18th century. This
design was quickly adapted to allow for sheet music and
canterburies continued to be produced throughout the
19th century for this purpose. Nowadays of course they make
the perfect spot to store those magazines and newspapers
which are cluttering up the room and come in a huge variety of
forms, timbers, qualities, shapes and sizes. This particular example
is elegant and constructed from well figured mahogany. The overall
condition is good with no structural defects to speak of.)
