Regency Skeleton Clock by William Carter, London

Eight day chain fusee movement of the finest quality with six spoke wheel crossings set between angular shaped plates joined by three turned, knopped pillars. Delicate escape wheel with steel anchor escapement.

Chased and pierced gilded bezel with silk fret supporting an enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands. Original steel rod pendulum with brass lenticular bob.

The clock stands on a Rosewood brass inlaid stepped angular base with inset silvered plaque signed ‘ Carter, Tooley Street, Southwark’ and rests on four ebony bun feet, with original glass dome. c.1790

‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists William Carter as working in London from 1725 – 1794
