Object Description
Rococo style side table with vernis Martin decoration and gilt bronze mounts
French, late 19th Century
Height 75cm, width 36cm, depth 36cm
This wonderfully little side table—also functional as a petit dressing table—is a fine example of 19th century French design. The table is crafted in the Louis XV Rococo style, with a bombe shaped body and cabriole legs. The surfaces throughout are profusely adorned with vernis Martin, depicting scenes drawn from the classical canon: Venus and cherubs aloft in clouds, for instance. The table is extensively mounted with gilt bronze, also wrought in the Rococo style. The top lifts to reveal a shallow compartment and a mirror, while the front of the piece contains a single drawer.
