Object Description

A fine Ancient Roman carnelian intaglio featuring an intricate engraving of Fortuna, the goddess of prosperity. The intaglio is oval in shape, with a smooth, flat reverse and rounded sides. The obverse features the goddess draped in a long stola, with her hair is fashioned in a up-do with a diadem. She reclines on a couch with her elbow leaning on a cushion behind her. Within her left arm rests a cornucopia, the characteristic symbol of the goddess representing abundance. Her right arm extends before her, holding onto possibly an agricultural object. There is some minor wear to the edges of the intaglio, and a triangular dark striation features to the reverse.

Date: Circa 1st-3rd Century AD
