Object Description

A Romano-Egyptian terracotta frog lamp from the second and fourth century AD. The oil lamp displays a large, decorated ovoid body with a small central filling hole and a burn hole situated on the nozzle. The body is enriched with a floral design exhibiting six petals surrounding the filling hole. A stem-like motif features from the centre down the nozzle with horizontal incisions. The frog lamp sits upon a ring foot inscribed with a central geometric motif or letter, now worn with age.

Date: 2nd – 4th Century AD
Period: Roman Period

Object Condition

Fine condition with soot to the nozzle. Some wear to the design consistent with age. Hairline crack around the joining point where the two moulds are connected.
