Object Description

Scottish Birch Country Chair

A mid 19th century Scottish birch wood high back arm chair.

Very similar “Glasgow Pattern” arm chairs can be seen in the “Scottish Vernacular Furniture” book by Bernard Cotton, pages 178-184.

The arm chair has a much higher back than normal with vertical splats and a shaped cross rail.

The joints are pegged and the arm supports have a single handmade screw to each side.

The solid birch seat and cross rails that make this a strong chair.

The chair is an excellent original waxed colour, the tips of all four legs have been spliced possibly because of wear and rot in the past. (Circa 1850)
