Object Description

This truly magnificent set of plates are the work of English pottery maker Copeland, also known as Spode. During the 19th Century, Copeland developed a reputation for the creation of the finest English porcelain, which is renowned for its high quality and elegant, refined design.

The set comprises 11 plates of identical sizes, which are decorated together as a set. Each plate features parcel-gilt and red ground borders, which are expertly arranged into geometric and floral designs. The centre of each plate is painted with an individual painting of game birds in a landscape setting at sunset. Some of the birds represented include pheasants, guinea fowl and partridges. The painted scenes are signed ‘C. J. Weaver’ after their decorator Charles Weaver, and the reverse of every plate is marked with the underglazed mark for the Copeland manufacturer, with additional numbers and makers marks.
