Object Description
Set of four antique Louis XV style gilt bronze sconces
French, late 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 33cm, depth 20cm
These beautiful gilt bronze wall sconces are designed in an elegant Rococo style after decorative arts of the Louis XV period (1715-1774). Characteristic of this style, they are composed of curved, asymmetrical organic forms. Each sconce features a serpentine, stylised acanthus leaf back plate, which mounts the light onto the wall. From each back-plate, there springs five leafy, winding arms which terminate in petalled drip-pans and flower-shaped capitals. These cup-like forms serve as the candle-holders.
