Object Description
Set of framed Italian Grand Tour cameo plaques
Italian, 19th Century
Height 28cm, width 23.5cm, depth 2.5cm
Within a gilt frame, this set of cameo portrait plaques was made in Italian during the time of the Grand Tour, and consists of a set of six classical profile portraits of gods and goddesses including Athena, Mars, Mercury, Bacchantes and female figure with a lyre. Group images are also featured, depicting (likely) Juno, Laetitia, and a further plaque depicting the Judgement of Solomon. Works such as these were popular during the Grand Tour, a time in which wealthy visitors to Italy were eager to take back pieces worthy of the Classical monuments and sites they had frequented. These fine cameos are no exception.
