Object Description

Very fine quality set of twelve 19th century Regency mahogany antique dining chairs. This set of chairs are an especially good size being as they are large enough to be comfortable without being too wide. Although they are a very elegant early 19th century design, with slender reeded decoration on the arms, legs and back uprights, in fact they are very solid. The design is interesting as it shows clearly the transition from George III period with both the earlier close reeding on the flat surfaces coupled with the reeded leg so typical of the Regency period. The curved x-frame back design echoes the classical form of furniture discovered in the excavations of the late 18th century. The construction is classic pre-Victorian, with tennon jointed frame, the back rail dovetailed on from above and hand saw marks by the corner stretchers. The later carvers are constructed to the same exceptional level of detail as the ten single chairs. A favourite detail has to be the small carved swags hanging under the top rail, a really lovely finishing touch.
