Object Description

An ornate polished cast iron three part shelf or bookcase, with nine shelves of adjustable height. The uprights are decorated with scrolls, rosettes, and floral motifs.

Made by Lucy & Co of Oxford, as marked to the foot of each end, formerly used in the library of the London Patent office.

Marked: PERFECT ADJUSTING SHELVING LAMBERT PATENT MANUF’D BY W. LUCY & Co LTD ENGINEERS & FOUNDERS OXFORD

Provenance: The first floor library of The New Patent Office, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, Holborn, London. Built: 1902. Designed by: Sir Henry Tanner (1849-1935) and Sir John Taylor (1833-1912).
