George Clare was painter of fruits and flowers who worked in Birmingham. He was the father of Oliver and Vincent Clare who followed in his footsteps to become painters and whose style and subjects were similar. He exhibited in 1864, 1866 and 1867 at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution, which was established as a rival to the Royal Academy and was located at Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, London. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. His style is similar to that of William Henry Hunt with highly detailed pictures of fruit, flowers, blossom and birds’ nests.
The work is housed in its original, period gilt frame, which is in excellent condition.
