Object Literature

John Nicholls was a still life painter who was born in 1885. He lived in Chiswick, London and exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club and the Redfern Gallery. He was elected a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers. Nicholls specialised in still life paintings of flowers similar in style to that of his peers Cecil Kennedy, Harold Clayton, Gerald Cooper and Bennett Oates. Like his contemporaries he was inspired by the Dutch Old Masters and their meticulous technique for capturing still life. Many of his works contain arrangement of lilies and roses, such as this beautiful example, which can symbolise purity and love.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
