Object Description

This superb crested George II silver flat chased coffee pot was made in London in 1743 by Messrs Gurney & Cook and measures 10.25 inches tall by 8.75 handle to spout and is 4 5/’8 inches in dia across the base. The body is beautifully chased with flowers and foliage, scrolls and shells and is crested to one side with a griffin holding a Maltese cross. The cast spout is gorgeous and very unusual in that it has shells cast above and below the spout and something I have never seen before – garlands of flowers down either side and an acanthus leaf at the top of the spout, the cast handle terminals are also very elaborate with shell, scroll and drop detailing, the hinged lid is also chased and it has a pineapple finial atop. It has a scrolled wooden handle and is fully and clearly hallmarked to the side and with the makers mark under the base, a magnificent pot in excellent condition weighing a hefty 34 ounces or 1037 grams.
