Object Description

This fantastic pair of cast George II silver candle sticks were made in London in 1754 by John Cafe and measure just over 10 inches tall, they are of a very unusual design and one which I have not come across before. The square bases feature scrolled acanthus leaves and shell designs with scrolling to the edges, at the base of the stems there is an unusual flower head design leading into the stem which has a knopf with gadrooned border and again acanthus leaves leading up the shaped stem where the base pattern is repeated again below the bowl which again has 2 rows of gadrooning and that in turn leads to the detachable sconces again with shell and scrolled leaf design. They are fully and clearly hallmarked under the base and to the bowls with the lion passant and again on the sconces with makers mark and lion passant. The designs on them are still well defined and they are in excellent condition weighing a hefty 43.5 ounces or 1351 grams.
