Object Description

A mid 19th century superb quality Anglo Indian rosewood profusely carved and upholstered side chair, probably from the Bombay region of large proportions.

This chairs consist of an elaborately carved back with central leaf decoration to the top with carved birds (possibly peacocks) to either side with entwined foliate and scrolled carving.

The back has a central deep buttoned upholstered panel with an upholstered drop-in seat.

This leads down to the profusely carved base, the front and side rails being shaped and carved with foliate decoration, the back rail consists of carved vine leaf decoration.

The front legs are of cabriole form with foliate decoration leading down to a bird carving and terminating to a paw foot with castors, the back legs are outswept with castors.

The back is also carved with an upholstered panel, the carving being the reverse images from the front carvings giving a three dimensional appearance.

The upholstery fabric is a wonderful silk Indian style fabric chosen to compliment the chair in turquoise, gold and pink tones and was sourced from the Silk Mills in Suffolk, UK.

The chair is in excellent condition for age, however this chair is probably more suited as a decorative piece rather than a practical one.
