Object Description

A superb quality late 19th century walnut open armchair in the early 18th century style with wonderful carving and patina comparable to that of a period early 18th century piece of furniture.

This armchair consists of an upholstered tan leather padded back and seat with stud decoration with superbly carved arms in the form of eagle heads, the shaped arm supports with carved acanthus and floral decoration with scroll design to the side.

The armchair is supported by finely carved cabriole legs to the front with carved scallop shell and foliate design and terminating with a scaled ball and claw foot, the two back legs of slender cabriole design with part carved scallop shell and terminating with a pad foot.

The superb quality of carving and the wonderful patina is comparable to that of a period early 18th century piece of furniture.

We have found an almost identical model of this chair in the book ‘English Furniture Illustrated’ by Oliver Bracket page 187 which shows a very similar walnut open armchair circa 1730 in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, a photo of this can be viewed in our images.

This armchair is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
