Object Description

This extremely fine shell shaped sterling silver gilt inkwell was made in London in 1906 by Garrards and measures 5 inches wide by 5.5 inches front to back and is approx 3 inches tall, it is fashioned as a scallop shell and stands on 4 cast snail feet, it is French gadrooned to both top and bottom borders and has a fluted shell design to the lid with alternating matte and plain designs, at the base of this there is a dolphin rising from the waves to one side and a flower head to the other, when lifting the lid there is a plain silver gilt insert with a central hole for the pen and a small knob for lifting it out to reveal a clear glass inkwell held in place with a gilt ring, there is also a box to the back with the inside being matte gilt. It is fully and clearly hallmarked to the side and also inside the lid and to the underside of the lift out insert and it is stamped underneath with R & B GARRARD & CO. HAYMARKET LONDON. A truly eye catching piece in excellent condition weighing ounces or grams.
