Object Literature

D Murray was the pseudonym of Robert Cleminson, a London landscape and animal artist who specialised in paintings of Setters and sporting dogs in Highland and Lakeland settings. He exhibited works at the British Institute and The Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street from 1865 – 1868. The Victorian era was the age of pet portraits, with the most important influence on their popularity being Queen Victoria, who owned an extensive number of dog breeds. This created a demand for portraits of dogs from artists such as Cleminson. This painting is an important example of his work with its soft yet expressive brush strokes. One of his most famous paintings is Glen Orchy Royal, which has been reproduced in print form.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
