‘The Harvester’ Antique Italian Marble Sculpture by Ferdinando Vichi
Italian, early 20th Century
Dimensions: Height 140cm, width 47cm, depth 55cm
This magnificent sculpture is crafted from Italian marble by the celebrated sculptor Ferdinando Vichi (1875-1945). Vichi was active in Florence in the late 19th and early 20th Century, and was inspired by both classical Renaissance works as well as the Romantic tendencies of his contemporaries.
The present work ‘La Vendemmiatrice’ or ‘The Harvester’ depicts a young woman in almost a dancing pose. Her right arm is raised to hold up a long grape vine, which dangles down her left hip. She smiles over her bare left shoulder, wearing a beautifully sculpted draped peasant dress.
The oval shaped base of the sculpture is signed ‘F. Vichi / Firenze’.
