Object Description
A late 16th to ealy 17th Century painting in oil on canvas from the Spanish School depicting the Lamentaion of Christ. In the scene of the Lamentation, Christ’s body has been cut down from the cross . His head is cradled in the arms of his mother, the Virgin Mary who is the focus of the picture. The emotions of the Virgin Mary are beautifully expressed largely through her hands and face, especially her weeping downcast eyes. Her hunched body adds to the overall impression of agony and her gentle tender embrace is symbolic of a mothers loss. A similar pose of Mary and Christ can be seen in Giotto’s Lamentation from 1305
