Object Description

The semi-spherical Sudanese beaten copper drum has a hide membrane held in place with wooden pegs. The inscription to the side reads:
Malik al Said Muhammad Ahmad al-sheikh Idris 1302 (this date equates to 1884/85)

Object History

The drum was captured in a punitive raid mounted by Lord Kitchener in the Sudan to avenge the murder and defeat of Gordon of Khartoum by the Mahdi in January 1885
