William Adolphus was from a family of painters; the Knells and the best known
with the finest quality of work in this family.
Believed to have been born in London, he went on to become a marine painter, who mainly painted views on the English Coast but also of the Dutch, Belgian and French coasts. He was strongly influenced by the Romantic Movement. His style can vary and certain coarseness pervades his later works. This work is however from his best period.
Apart from his inshore scenes he also depicted several naval actions including
Camperdown and the action in which Von Tromp was killed in 1633.
He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy between 1815 and 1866 and at the British Institution between 1827 and 1867 and Suffolk Street Gallery until 1874.
William is known to have painted two paintings for Queen Victoria.

The 1861 Census record the family as living in St Pancras, London. William Adolphus, then aged 58 was married to Susan; his son William Callcott, aged 32
was married to Maria and another son, Adolphus was aged 12. Both William Callcott and Adolphus went on to become successful marine painters too.

William died in London on July 10th, 1875.
