Object Description

This set of twenty two antique dining chairs comprise two very similar sets of chairs, one is a set of fourteen (twelve singles and two carvers) and the other a set of eight (six singles and two carvers). These two sets of chairs are so similar in design and construction that they must have come from the same maker and may have even been made for the same house if the provenance is to be believed. Both sets of chairs are beautifully made and are a generous size for the period. They have very fine carved detail including an eagle head to each of the upper corners of the back and the front of each arm of the carvers.

English circa 1880

Provenance: The chairs are reported to have been made for the Debenham family of Debenham House, Addison Road, Ladbroke Grove, London, one set around 1870 the other 1880-1885 to a circa 1785 model illustrated in Lenygons.
