These exquisite vases were originally made to store pot-pourri, their design incorporating pierced lids, which allow the scent of flowers and spices to escape and fill the room. While they can still be used for this purpose, they may also be enjoyed simply as beautiful, purely aesthetic decorative art objects.
The vases are comprised of light grey marble bowls, covered by pierced gilt bronze (ormolu) lids, which are fitted with ring handles. Each marble bowl is encircled by a foliate gilt bronze band, which is carried on the backs of three gilt bronze swans, with wings outstretched and necks arched. Each swan’s body continues down to terminate in a single paw foot. These stand on triform marble and gilt bronze bases.
