A Fine Two Day Marine Chronometer by A.Johannsen & Co. No. 6002

Three tier mahogany brass bound box with inset carrying handles, decorated brass escutcheon and key to the base, ‘push button’ brass knob opening to the third tier. Brass rectangular plate to the front of the box -unsigned. The mahogany box has a rich patina in keeping with an instrument of this age.

The jewelled movement is a full brass plate chain fusee with hatched plates and four stepped pillars with Harrison’s maintaining power. Earnshaw type spring detent escapement with split bi-metallic balance with cylindrical shaped temperature compensation weights. Polished steel helical balance spring and faceted diamond endstone.

The 3 ¾ inch silvered dial signed ‘A.Johannsen & Co, makers to the Admiralty, The Indian Government and Royal Navies of Italy, Spain and Portugal. 149 Minories, London’. Numbered 6002 with subsidiary dials for seconds and up/down (state of wind), Roman numerals and original polished brass hands.

The movement is set in a lacquered brass bowl with screw down bezel mounted within a pivoted gimbal with knurled locking screw and tipsy key. C,1900

Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world by Brian Loomes lists Danish born Asmus Johannsen as working in London from 1863-9.

He is also listed in Chronometer Makers of the World by Tony Mercer as a great maker supplying other makers. He worked from various addresses in London from 1859 before finally moving to 149 Minories in 1865. The firm continued in business until 1937.
