Crafted in France in the early 20th Century, these are truly exquisite pedestals. The items are crafted from white onyx—a precious gemstone displaying beautiful natural parallel bands of orange colour.
The pedestals are designed in the form of classical columns. They are topped by stepped square onyx slabs, which provide flat surfaces to display fine objects on. The pedestals feature cylindrical onyx shafts, which are crowned by gilt bronze (ormolu) capitals, decorated with egg-and-dart, scrollwork and seashell bands. The column-like shafts stand on circular gilt bronze bases, which are set on tall onyx plinths. These plinths are edged, at their bottoms, with gilt bronze foliate bands. They are placed on onyx blocks, on slim gilt bronze feet.
