Object Description

These beautiful vases are designed after an 18th Century model by the famous French chaser-gilder, Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813). Gouthière crafted exquisite decorative art objects for an important clientele, which included Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and Louis XV’s mistress, Madam Du Barry.

The vases feature Verde Antico (green) marble bowls, with gadrooned lower bodies and smooth, waisted necks. They are mounted, on their mouths, with gilt bronze (ormolu) pierced galleries, and with foliate finials on their bases. The marble bowls are supported on gilt bronze triform supports. These feature scrolled tops, decorated with satyr head masks, draped with fruit swags, and fitted with fruiting foliage wreath handles. The triform supports terminate in hoof feet, which are linked by pierced stretchers. In each piece, a gilt bronze sculpture of a snake spirals down the space between the three legs. The vases are set on circular Verde Antico bases, raised up on gilt bronze toupie feet.
