Two large antique Canton porcelain and ormolu vases
The porcelain Chinese, the ormolu French, 19th Century
Height 56cm, diameter 30cm
This impressive pair of 19th Century baluster porcelain vases were made in Canton, China, for export to the foreign European market. In Europe, and France specifically, they have been adapted by adding very fine gold ormolu mounts, in the European taste.
The vases are decorated with Chinese motifs including figures in landscapes, flowers, vases and other objects, all set on a blue and white geometric and scrolling floral ground. The vases are set on bases made from French ormolu in the Louis XVI style, with additional ormolu mounts to the rims and necks. The porcelain covers are similarly decorated and are finished with ormolu finials.
The vases display a pleasing balance between the delicate patterns of the porcelain and the grandeur of the ormolu mounts. They beautifully display the skill of both Chinese and French craftsmen of the 19th century and can be enjoyed as impressive works of art and aesthetically pleasing works of design.
