Object Description

These exceptional carved giltwood mirrors are designed in a refined classically inspired style which was fashionable in the early 18th-Century when Philippe II was regent of France. Characterised by its elegance and delicacy, this so-called Régence style marked a transition from the heaviness and grandeur of the Louis XIV or Baroque style towards the elaborate, ornamental character of the Rococo of Louis XV.

The items feature mirrored fronts contained within rectangular frames with arched tops. These shaped arches and finely decorated with scrollwork, stylised acanthus leaves, and ovolo borders. Their shoulders are topped by flower baskets and their crest rails crowned by cartouches, palmettes and floral motifs. The mirrors’ rectangular frames are carved with bellflowers and scrolls, and the side sections are styled to look like Corinthian pilasters decorated with foliage, seashells and cartouches. Stylised birds, scrolled acanthus leaves and trails of flowers decorate the outer sides of the mirrors. The lower corners of the frames form scrolled acanthus leaves which terminate in stylised cockerel heads. Cartouches containing seashells serve as drop-finials attached to the bases of the scrolls. The mirrors’ bottom rails feature carved motifs composed of C-scrolls, centred on palmettes.
