This exquisite pair of sky blue porcelain vases feature colourful paintings of flowers and parcel gilt motifs, enhanced with elaborate gilt bronze mounts. The pair take the form of classical kraters, with their wide upper bodies, necks and mouths. Indeed, the vases play with this classical prototype by featuring scrolling foliate handles where there would have been volute ones.
The vases are secured to square gilt bronze plinths, which are decorated with acanthus leaves, by gilt bronze leaf mounts. Their porcelain feet are decorated with gilt floral decoration and the fillet of each vase features painted depictions of flowers. Above, the bodies of the vases are framed — on all sides, from above their feet, around their sides and along the rim of their mouths — by gilt bronze mounts, cast as growing vines and leaves. Their light blue bodies are fluted and painted, in each recessed scallop, with colourful flowers, set against a white background, with parcel gilt borders. The necks of the vases are parcel gilt with continuous foliate patterns. Topping the bodies are the lids, which are ornamented in much the same way as the bodies, with foliate parcel gilt motifs, and fluting with panels of flower paintings outlined in gold. Large gilt bronze pomegranate finials, depicted in the process of unwrapping, top the vases.
These beautiful vases are full of colour and organic vitality, and will be sure to liven up an interior.
