Object Description

Unusual c. 1880 Heriz Carpet
3.60 x 2.64 m

Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction, and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This unusual c. 1880 example employs an all-over pomegranate blossom motif, derived from earlier Azerbaijani rugs of the 18th century and symbolising prosperity, fertility, and longevity, rather than the conventional central medallion composition more commonly found in Heriz carpets – an open, grand-scale drawing, especially relative to this piece’s size. Its ocean grey field provides a soft backdrop to the well-balanced palette used in its charmingly naive design, including tones of tan, ivory and various greens, all in organic vegetable dyes and framed by a wide, decorative border.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use – after nearly a century-and-a-half, its colours have taken on a characterful patina, although the carpet has had some minor age-related restoration, finished to a high standard.

A timeless carpet, and a rare example of its type, to add personality and style to either a classic or contemporary interior.
